IS YOUR DOG A "SCOOTER?"
One of the questions I get asked as a groomer is:  "Can you check my dog's anal glands or do I have to bring him/her to the vet?" Well, it's not such an easy question to answer!

Anal glands, located close to the end of a dog's anus, secrete a lubricating liquid. In most cases, anal glands naturally empty, but sometimes they become impacted, especially in smaller breeds. When this happens, it can be uncomfortable for the dog. The result is any number of symptoms, such as excessive licking, scooting along the carpet or on grass, or even tail-chasing.

As a groomer, I am able to express anal glands externally -- but only if the glands are not too full. Once they become impacted, they need to be expressed from inside the dog's anus. This procedure should only be done by a veterinarian.

If full anal glands become a chronic problem, it is always best to ask a vet for advice. However, I have found that adding fiber to your dog's diet can be a simple way to help remedy the problem. One method for adding fiber without changing your dog's existing diet is to add about 1-2 teaspoons (depending upon the size of your dog) of canned pumpkin to each meal. Make sure it is pure pumpkin with no sugar or additives.
IN BETWEEN GROOMS
It's always a good idea to brush out a dog's coat between grooms. It will remove dead hair, help prevent matting, and distribute the dog's natural oils throughout its coat to keep it lustrous and healthy.

spray bottleTo keep your dog smelling fresh between grooms, I recommend "Stinky Dog-Gone."
This non-aerosol, non-toxic formula is safe for dogs and the environment -- but it gets rid of even the most troublesome odors fast. Stinky Dog-Gone works like magic and deodorizes on contact. It has a very pleasant fragrance. A 16 oz. bottle is $ 12.95 plus tax. I carry this product and will be happy to order and deliver it to you.
LOOKING FOR A PET SITTER?
If you don't like leaving your dog in a kennel, consider using a pet sitter as an alternative. Pet sitters visit your home on a pre-determined schedule to let your dog out, feed him or her, and provide socialization. Some pet sitters will even arrange to stay in your home overnight.

A good resource to locate a pet sitter is the Asheville Area Professional Pet Sitters Association. Visit their website, www.ashevilleareapetsitters.com, to locate a member near you.
ADOPT A PET!
The spring brings many wonderful things to our area -- but it also is the time when the Asheville Humane Society shelter is bursting at the seams with puppies and kittens. There are many lovable older dogs and cats available too. Now is the best time to adopt a pet, so if you, your family, or friends are looking for a canine companion for your dog -- or a feline to keep him or her in line -- make the AHS shelter your first stop. See all the animals available for adoption at www.ashevillehumane.org .
