Making the Switch to "Premium" Dog Food

Periodically, Bandanas will ask experts in our community to share information about issues affecting dogs. This article about premium dog food is provided by Woof Gang Bakery.

Switching to premium dog food can be one of the best decisions a pet owner can make.  Leaving "grocery store" dog food behind may change your dog's life forever. Approaching your pet's diet with a no-grain, higher quality ingredient list can change your dog from the inside out! While many think that pricier dog food proves to be a "gimmick," this could not be further from the truth. Instead, a pet parent can change and even sometimes save a dog's life by what they feed them.  After all, they are what they eat!

It is important to remember that the first five ingredients listed on the back of the bag are what the food mainly consists of. Consumers should look for wholesome ingredients such as chicken, beef, and fish, instead of empty fillers like animal by-products, dried egg product, and rice. By-products are the remains of the animal that dogs cannot naturally digest as easily. These parts include beaks, feathers, bones, etc. We as humans would not eat such products and should not pass this on to our furry companions.

Concentrate on a diet rich in protein and wholesome fruits and vegetables. Eliminating grain reduces the risk of skin and coat allergies and satisfies a pet's overall need for a balanced meal.  Consider your dog's diet as you would your own. We would feel healthier, stronger, and maintain our weight a lot easier if we too cut out the extra grains (carbohydrates) and focused on a diet rich in fruits and vegetables. The same concept relates to animals and will help them lead a healthier and longer life.

Dogfoodanalysis.com states:

Grains are not a natural part of a canine diet and it is pleasing to see dog foods on the market that exclude grains completely from the diet. This is a far more natural food concept and combined with a complete lack of any low quality or controversial ingredients is the reason this food is placed in a class above the more conventional form dry dog foods.
