| THE DOG DAYS OF SUMMER |
|
Summer's a great time to be outside with your dog, especially up on the Blue Ridge or frolicking in the water at a place like Bent Creek. But it's also a time when dogs are susceptible to heat stroke.
A dog releases heat through its skin and by panting, but the canine cooling system is not very efficient, so dogs can overheat quickly. That's when heat stroke becomes a real risk. Heat stroke is a very serious condition that can cause death.
As temperatures and humidity rise, follow the same common sense practices with your dog as you would with yourself -- but be even more aware of your dog's sensitivity to the heat. Minimize your dog's outside time during the hottest portions of the day. Always have fresh water available and put it in the shade. Exercise your dog early or late, when conditions are cooler. Work up to exercise gradually if you take your dog to a hotter climate. NEVER leave your dog unattended in a car during the summer, even with the windows open.
Signs of heat stroke include lethargy, staggering, dry tongue and gums, glazed eyes, erratic breathing, unusually heavy panting, and vomiting.
If you suspect your dog is overheating, remove him from hot conditions immediately, apply cool (not cold) water to the pads of the feet, give your dog ice chips or small quantities of water, and get him to a vet as soon as possible.

| A HOT WEATHER TREAT: DOG BISCUIT ICE CREAM |
|
Here's a great summertime recipe that dogs love... but it's a special treat, so don't feed it too often!
1 pint vanilla lowfat or nonfat frozen yogurt
1 cup lowfat dog biscuits - crushed
Mix together and refreeze. Can also be turned into individual frozen treats by putting into cookie cutters before refreezing.

| NOTES FROM THE GROOMER |
|
- If you notice liquid in your driveway after I finish grooming, don't worry -- it's just water. It's harmless condensation from the van's air conditioner.
- I am now offering a low fat doggie treat from Three Dog Bakery with each groom, as an alternative to the regular complimentary treats I provide. Please let me know if you would like your dog to have a low fat treat.
